So... having children they want everything, especially this time of year. Taylor loves to watch Nick Jr. and Disney.... and they always have toy commercials and this time of year its worse!! Every time Taylor ask for something or while we are at a store that has toys I get to say "Ask Santa" and she drops it... she doesn't ask again and doesn't throw a tantrum, all i have to say is "Ask Santa" (im dreading Jan 1st when i can no longer say that for a while!)
Well one tradition that i am adding to this family is "Elf on the Shelf" If you don't know what that is just google it :) Its super cute and I can't wait to tell you all about it once "She" yes, since i have two girls our elf is going to be a girl... Shows up on our doorstep Dec 1st!
On Dec 1st our Elf is going to bring 24 little gifts (like stocking stuffer gifts, super inexpensive, I bought most of them from the dollar tree) these little gifts are going to be from Santa. Each night if Taylor behaves the Elf will go back to the North Pole to report to santa if she has been a good or bad girl... if she was good that day (no tantrums, talking back.. helping me with Nora..ect) She will get to open a gift... This is really an Advent calendar, when she gets older and no longer believes in the Elf...but works out well with the Elf on the Shelf.
I saw this idea last year on Pinterest with a Grinch theme but i saw it in Dec and was too late to start, so i have been waiting an entire year to do this, and I am so excited to see the look on Taylor's face and soon to be Nora's when they get to use this Advent calendar to open 1 gift every day till christmas! ....
Advent Calendar Tutorial
Supplies:
(1) Over the door Shoe organizer (has 24 pockets) less than $6.00 (found at walmart)
(2) spools of your choice of ribbon .97 cents each (found at walmart)
(1) package of tinsel garland... you can pick any kind of embellishments for this advent calendar. This tinsel was .97 cents (found at walmart)
Glue Gun
(24) Cloths Pins (tutorial in post before this how to decorate them)
(24) Number Cards
Open the shoe organizer to flatten out some of the wrinkles.. you can even pass a super low iron on the back (do not touch anything plastic) to get some of the wrinkles out... that is what i did. You would take your glue gun and your choice of ribbon and hot glue to the white lining of the pockets. (You can hot glue the ribbon straight across, no cutting till the end)
Then take your choice of middle embellishment, mine was tinsel garland and hot glue to the bottom of the pockets. The end and very top, I used white fur ribbon (found in the ribbon section of hobby lobby)
Last step, take your cards and cloths pins and hang on the outside of the pockets. If you have a laminating machine.. you can laminate the cards so they last a long time! which i do not have one, so they are just made of cardstock. Fill up your pockets with 24 small gifts and count down until Christmas!
When the day passes you can take the card and put it inside the empty pocket!
Next post will be a tutorial on the cards for the Advent Calendar, if you do not feel like making your own cards you can purchase my design for $1.00 and i will send a PDF where you can download, print, and cut for your Advent Calendar!
